Last week I collaborated with the stunning Harriet Chiam and Lindsey Jenkins, a great make up artist and hair stylist on a lovely beauty shoot based on Martin Schongauer's painting Madonna in the Rose Garden, inspired by The Golden Age of Botanical Art. The idea behind the shoot was not only to re-create Schongauer's painting but also to reflect on a sentence within the book where the author notices that Schongauer was very good at capturing the growth of a flower. This is essentially what I wanted to show in this series.
The first stage of the shoot consisted of Lindsey doing Harriet's hair and make up. We have both decided on red lipstick and gold eyeshadows to relate back to the colours in the painting and on curly hair inspired by Mary's hair. This stage aims to show a rose in full bloom, when it is the prettiest and most admirable.
A few hours later, me and Harriet went back to the studio for the second stage of the shoot. The mood has changed with the help of black backdrop and darker lighting. But that's not the only thing that has changed. Harriet's hair has gone down a fair bit and her lipstick looks far less shiny. This is supposed to represent the wilting rose.
