Solitude

A few months back, I have been looking through some online magazine in order to discover some great photographers as well as looking into submitting some of my own work. I have come across The Unexposed Magazine and its call for submissions. The theme for the upcoming issue was Solitude. Very quickly I started collecting thoughts and feelings that would relate to this particular word. I thought of myself 7 years ago, when my family has first left our country and came to live in England. How lonely I felt. Everything has completely changed. When living in Poland, I have had my small group of best friends and a lot of good friends at school but since coming to England, I was pretty much on my own. The world around me has grown and was no longer the familiar place I knew. It made me feel so small.

That's what I wanted to show in the pictures. Remembering the beautiful work of Harry Callahan who has photographed his wife Eleanor and their daughter Barbara, I thought it would be great to recreate the very similar style in my images because it described exactly what I wanted to show. I have loaded my Holga with some black and white film and went out exploring with my boyfriend, Peter who was the model. I have chosen empty places around the house I live in now. Although I have imagined the pictures to come out nice and sharp, I do like the unexpected blurry effect as I think it adds some mystery to it.

You can view the magazine here and find my work on pages 18 to 23.
